For most apartment owners in city, balconies are the closest to a backyard or garden you can have. If you're lucky enough to have a balcony, then you should make the most of it. There’s no better place than a balcony to enjoy the view for a while, sip your morning coffee or have a relaxed evening with friends. No matter how small it is; your balcony can be turned into an inviting and cosy place.
"Maximising your tiny balcony space can be easy with the right combination of fun furniture pieces and decorative, but functional objects,” says Lauren Visco, an interior designer.
No idea where to start? Read on to get inspired by these ideas and tips and see how you can transform your outdoor space.
1. Add Space-Saving Furniture
You can maximise your square footage with space saving built-in-seating. You push it up against the rail edge of the balcony; you can fit two chairs on the sides, or a narrow bench like the one below. You can then make it cosy and inviting with Pillows and throws, add colour & pattern with a runner.
2. Use Your Wall Space
In a small balcony, we need to think vertically—more so when it comes to plants. You can hang planters or weather-resistant art to make your balcony feel like an extension of your apartment.
3. Change the flooring, make it beautiful
Cold concrete flooring can be the worst part about apartment balconies. You don’t want to step outside with bare feet – so you can change it up with easy-install wood, plastic patio tiles or grass.
4. Start a Plant Collection
Let your inner plant parent shine through your balcony. If you don't have space for a full-blown rooftop garden, your balcony is a great alternative.
5. Bring In Some Lights
Give yourself enough light on the balcony when the sun goes down or for late-night hangouts by installing an outdoor pendant or sconces. If you're renting, go for outdoor lanterns wrap some string lights around the railing.
6. Create a Sense of Privacy
Often apartment balconies are exposed to the world, which can be a let-down. . You don't have to live your life in public, though – You can also hang bamboo shades that can be raised and lowered as needed. If you have glass, cover it with an exterior-grade window film, in a partly opaque or frosted finish. In case you have metal railing for your balcony, pick up a privacy screen.
7. Create Flow from Inside Out
Integrating the balcony with living room is a trend that works for large modern balconies, as well as small balconies. To make it work, it is important to maintain aesthetic consistency with the interiors of your living room. It is suggested to use the same room finishes or look for similar ones to achieve an unified look.
8. Add Pattern with an Outdoor Rug
Deck-up your balcony with a patterned rug or runner. Be sure to choose one that will blend-in or pop-up the décor elements.
